Protect Your Smile…And Your Heart

The health of your mouth is a barometer for the general health of your entire body. In fact, your mouth can reflect the state of your bone, tendon, and tissue health in general. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, more than 90 percent of all systemic diseases (diseases that affect your whole body, not just one part of it) produce oral signs and symptoms. Plus, consider that an unhealthy mouth (especially gum disease) not only leads to tooth loss but has been strongly linked to serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and even preterm labor.

The good news is studies have shown that two of Baseline Nutritional’s products, Triple Jointed™ and Proteolytic Enzymes may be able to save your smile…and your life. That’s right, as it turns out, two products designed to offer systemic relief from chronic joint pain and inflammation have shown that they might play a key role in preventing and reversing periodontal diseases.

Toxic mouth

At any given time there are more than 500 species of bacteria in your mouth. It is these bacteria that form that sticky, colorless film on your teeth known as plaque, the “gateway to many health problems.” When mineral salts in saliva combine with plaque, hard deposits known as tartar or calculus that can’t be removed by brushing alone are formed on your teeth.

Plaque can build up at your gum line where even more bacteria can accumulate in the space between your gums and your teeth. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate your gums causing them to become inflamed and bleed (gingivitis). This causes your gums to separate from your teeth forming spaces between your teeth and gums (pockets) that become infected.

The toxins produced by the bacteria and the infection in these pockets can also stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which your body, in essence, turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen, the inflammation and infection increase, and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. This is called periodontitis.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a condition in which the connection between the teeth, gums, and jawbone is broken down – a condition, in fact, in which your jawbone and the ligaments that hold your teeth to your jawbone are literally eaten away.

If you don’t think this is something you don’t need to worry about, think again! Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms (at first) so that many are unaware that they suffer from it. In fact, about 75% of Americans have gum disease and don’t know it! The bottom line is periodontitis results in loosening of the gums from the teeth, and eventually loosening of the teeth from the jawbone – not to mention bad breath and life threatening chronic illness (which we’ll talk about later).

ASU to the Rescue

It is now understood that one biochemical in particular is responsible for the erosion of oral structures – literally eating away at your jawbone and the ligaments that hold your teeth to your jaw. This oral toxin is called Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and it has been referred to as the “common mediator of the inflammation process.” Your body’s counter measure to IL-1beta is a family of biochemicals called “Transforming growth factor-beta.” TGF-beta has been identified as one of the factors capable of counteracting IL-1beta’s destructive effects and plays a key role in tissue regeneration. Unfortunately, one of the effects of IL-1beta is that it inhibits the production of TGF-beta, the very substance that can counteract it and repair the damage. Luckily we have ASU.

What is ASU?

Several years ago, researchers from the University Hospital in Liege, Belgium reported in the August 2003 issue of The Journal of Rheumatology that a phytosterol/sterolin extract concentrated from the oils found tightly bound to avocado and soybean fibers (known as Avocado/Soy Unsaponifiables, or ASU) could significantly slow down and even repair some of the damage caused by osteoarthritis in as little as nine days. It was for this reason that Jon Barron used it as the key ingredient in his Triple Jointed™, which was designed to provide nutritional support for people with chronic joint pain and inflammation. But what does this have to do with gum disease?

Study 1

Last month findings were released from a French study conducted by the Laboratory of Connective Tissue Biochemistry and the Maxillary-Facial Surgery Department, Universitary Hospital Center in Caen, France. These useful findings support the hypothesis that ASU can exert a preventive action on the erosive effects exerted by IL-1beta in periodontal diseases. In other words, ASU can protect your smile.

This in vitro study investigated the effect of ASU on the expression of the protective TGF-beta family of growth factors by examining periodontal ligament and oral bone cells when exposed to the destructive IL-1beta. Cells were incubated for 48 hours. Researchers found that a decrease in these growth factors resulted in an enhanced erosive effect of the IL-1beta on both the periodontal ligament cells and the oral bone cells. The exciting news is that researchers found that ASU stimulated the production of the protective TGF-beta family of growth factors. In other words, ASU helped the periodontal ligament and oral bone cells protect themselves by inhibiting the erosive effect of IL-1beta. According to the researchers, these “findings support the hypothesis that ASU could exert a preventive action on the deleterious effects exerted by IL-1beta in periodontal diseases.”

Study 2

And then there’s the 2001, French study conducted at the Laboratory of Non-Mineralized Tissues at the University of Paris which focused on another problem associated with IL-1beta. This study focused on gingival fibroblasts (connective tissue cells). Normally, gingival fibroblasts secrete substances that are designed to degrade tissue and bone after injury to clear the way for new tissue and bone to form, as well as substances that trigger new growth. In periodontal disease, again thanks to IL-1beta, there appears to be an imbalance of too much degrading substance and not enough rebuilding substance. Researchers found that gingival fibroblasts that were cultured with ASU for 72 hours in the presence of IL-1beta reversed this imbalance noting that ASU might be beneficial in patients with gingival inflammation and periodontitis by preventing the erosive effects of IL-1beta that occur in periodontal diseases.

Study 3

And finally, there’s the 1998, French Study conducted by the Faculty of Dental Surgery University Rene Descartes in Paris. In this study, researchers analyzed the effect of ASU on human leukocyte elastase (HLE) in cases of gingivitis.

HLE is one of several hydrolytic (water removing) enzymes contained in neutrophils. Physiologically, it digests foreign material ingested by immune cells. However, when triggered by the inflammation and infection associated with gingivitis, it attacks the elastic and preelastic fibers that help hold your teeth in place. This destruction is a hallmark of periodontal disease. Findings from the study showed that avocado and soybean unsaponifiables protect all types of gingival elastic fibers from degradation by HLE. According to the researchers, “Avocado and soybean unsaponifiables may be beneficial in patients with gingival inflammation and periodontitis since HLE plays a major role in these disease states.”

The Mouth/Heart Connection

At the top of this newsletter, we mentioned that poor mouth health may indicate trouble in other areas of your body. And keep in mind that statistically 75% of Americans (or anyone living in the industrialized world) have gum disease and don’t know it! This may be deadly.
The problem is that periodontal bacteria can enter the blood stream and travel to major organs and begin new infections. Research is suggesting that this may contribute to the development of heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death. Yes, it seems that the connection between the mouth and the heart goes well beyond a kiss.

  • Recent studies appearing in the Journal of Periodontology examined this connection:
    In one study researchers looked at 150 individuals with periodontal diseases and found that the total number of periodontal bacteria in plaques below the gum-line was higher in individuals that had suffered from an acute heart attack.
  • The second study found that the same DNA from different kinds of periodontal bacteria in plaque was also in the patients’ heart arteries.
  • The third and most recent study investigated how the severity of periodontal disease and the number of remaining teeth relates to myocardial infarction (heart attacks) and hypertension. Results of this study examining 4,254 subjects offered a clear link between dental health and heart disease. The number of diseased periodontal pockets was significantly related to hypertension no matter the age of the subject. Even more alarming for middle-aged people is the finding that the number of teeth was associated with heart attacks. The fewer the teeth, the more likely a heart attack.

Add to this the links between poor oral health and increased risk of stroke and increased risk of having a preterm, low birth weight baby. Plus poor oral health poses a serious threat to people whose health is compromised by diabetes, respiratory diseases, or osteoporosis. The bottom line is that good oral health is not just about your smile, it’s about your life.

Addendum: Proteolytic Enzymes

The use of proteolytic enzymes for eliminating dental plaque is certainly controversial. There have been several studies that have produced mixed results, and in fact, there are some proteolytic enzymes (remember there are thousands of different kinds) that actually promote the growth of plaque.

Which brings us to Jon Barron’s Proteolytic Enzyme formula. Although not designed with dental plaque in mind, we have nevertheless received a number of testimonials from people who have told us remarkably once they started using the formula, the plaque and tartar just disappeared. Amazingly, it turns out that this very concept is being examined by the National Institute of Dental Health and Craniofacial Research and by Boston University Medical School in an on-going study titled “Salivary Proteins in Dental Integuments.’ While the results of the study are not yet available since the project end date is not until May 31, 2010 (start date was Jan 1, 1983), the premise of the study offers support for the reports we have been getting regarding Baseline Nutritionals’ Proteolytic Enzymes. Since it seems to directly relate, let’s take a brief look at that premise.

As we’ve already discussed, the formation of plaque plays a central role as the catalyst in oral disease. Plaque is formed by a selective attachment and growth of oral microorganisms on a protein based film which tightly adheres to the surface of teeth. The study is designed to examine if tooth enamel is affected by plaque and how to counter any such effect and protect your tooth enamel. The exciting part of this study is that it is exploring the role of proteolytic enzymes on enamel protection and treatment.

  1. Using enzymes to prevent cavities or caries is based on two enzymatic actions: 
    Interference with bacterial attachment mechanisms.
  2. Promotion of antimicrobial mechanisms via the salivary lactoperoxidase system.

The question, of course, is what proteolytic enzymes are they testing? There are thousands to choose from, and not all are created equal. For example, veterinary hospitals and pet supply outlets sell sprays and mouthwashes that contain enzymes (usually Glucose Oxidase, Lactoperoxidase, and Lysozyme) that dissolve plaque and help reduce bacteria. They are not nearly as effective as brushing the teeth but are better than no home care.

On the other hand, it appears that Jon’s Proteolytic Enzyme formula produces dramatic improvement in both tooth hygiene and gum health in just a matter of days. And keep in mind, that’s just a minor beneficial side effect of the formula.
